I don’t know what’s with me, my short posts lately are a little bit saddening, but oh well. If their going to be short they’ll be short and better that way. =]

The Curse of Immortality

The Earth watched with measure interest at the proceedings on her surface. In the short time these humans had claimed her as their home, she’d often amused herself by watching their small and short lives. Occasionally she let herself get attached to one, but she couldn’t stand watching their pain. Their fleeting lives were so short, but so full of meaning. They shouldn’t have to deal with it, and she often felt angry with the evil they had unleashed on themselves. How could these small beings, whose lives faded so quickly, make such a difference to her, the Unchanging One they called earth?
Her pain had given way to amusement when the humans had attempted to ‘save her’ during a short cycle of her revolution around the sun that warmed her surface ever so slightly. She smiled to herself. That they cared was sweet. They didn’t affect her very much however, and it only saddened her to think how soon these small creatures would be gone, forever moved on from her surface. But watching them cycle from birth to death, falling in love with each and every one only to lose them, that was the curse of immortality.

How clever to think of the Earth as immortal. It’s not something we normally think of when we think about immortality. I feel an underlying hope below the surface of this – not sure if it was intentional but I feel it. 🙂
Hehe… very well thought out, as Kay noted. Reading this made me feel really, really small and insignificant.
Thanks, I always feel very small when I consider the universe so I wanted to communicate something like that with this.
Cool interpretation. Good point, too. It’s funny how we puny humans think we’re big enough to fix anything…or that we even have to.
If I think about the world I feel so tiny and I think about it often but I have never considered that it may think about me too! Lovely idea!
I love how you give us Earth’s view of looking at us from a distance. How much more Earth can see from that vantage point compared to those of us here who can’t ‘see the forest for the trees’.
